WHO I AM
Background experience
I’ve been a practicing medical professional since 1994 having completed my undergraduate training at Nottingham University. I gained a broad exposure to various disciplines including endocrinology, general medicine, neurosurgery, and health care of the elderly before post-graduate ophthalmic training in Nottingham and Birmingham. I completed my Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and subsequently joined the Newcastle Eye Centre located at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital as a NHS consultant in 2008. My interests include cataract surgery, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and general ophthalmology.
I have lectured internationally on how to safely teach cataract surgery and published a textbook “Cataract Phacoemulsification Surgery" on the subject. I have acted as a Principle Investigator in several multi centred research trials. For several years I was the North of Tyne and Gateshead Diabetic Eye Screening Program lead and currently act as Head of School for ophthalmic training in the Northern deanery. I am passionate about providing excellent eye care for my clients.
MY PUBLICATIONS
Throughout my time as a professional Ophthalmologist, I’ve been able to take part in eye research and have numerous medical journal publications. My experience of personally performing cataract surgery in patients with and without other eye conditions (for example diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration) and supervising trainee surgeons to perform safe cataract surgery over many years encouraged me to share my surgical knowledge. To this effect I wrote, illustrated and published a textbook on cataract surgery.
